Banana Split Milkshake

Updated: Mar 1, 2020

My daughters were having a banana split one day. There I was sitting there and watching them indulging themselves as I ponder about putting the whole banana split into a milkshake. Today, I decided to put my thoughts into action. A banana split is traditionally served in a boat-like dish with a fresh banana cut into halves, hence the name. It is then topped with ice-cream and nuts, usually with drizzling of chocolate sauce.

So, how to have the "banana split" in a milkshake? I sliced the banana lengthwise thinly and place them at the sides of the serving mason jar, sorta to have that "banana split" effect. I did not want to go over the top with the garnishing and toppings. I ended up topping the milkshake with a simple whipped cream, maraschino cherry and chocolate wafer stick.

What I did over the top with is the milkshake itself. It is filled with ice-cream, frozen bananas, milk, dark chocolate, cherry rum and walnuts. You can omit the alcohol and replace it with syrup that comes with the maraschino cherry. The reason I am using frozen bananas is that they add creaminess to the milkshake rather than the fresh ones. You can peel + slice some fresh ripe bananas, freeze them the day before. Overall, this is a really awesome milkshake. Full indulgence indeed! I really hope you will give this recipe a try.

(Serve 1)

  • Milkshake:

  • High Quality Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, 160g

  • Whole Milk, 1/3 Cup

  • Black Cherry Rum / Syrup From Maraschino Cherry, 1/8 Cup

  • Frozen Bananas, 2

  • High Quality Dark Chocolate Preferably Valrhona, 60g

  • Walnuts, 20g

  • Garnishing:

  • Fresh Ripe Banana Thinly Sliced Lengthwise, 1

  • Whipped Cream, For Garnishing

  • Chocolate Wafer Stick, 1

  • Maraschino Cherry, 1

  • Blender

  • 16oz Mason Jar

  1. Chill serving mason jar in the fridge until ready to use.

  2. Prepare the milkshake.

  3. In a blender, add in ice cream, milk, rum, bananas, chocolate and walnuts.

  4. Pulse the mixture a few times to break up the ice-cream.

  5. Blitz it up to combine the mixture.

  6. *As soon as you see the mixture is combined well, stop blitzing. Over-blitzing will cause the ice-cream to melt super fast and causing it to split.*

  7. Assemble the milkshake.

  8. Place sliced bananas at the sides of the mason jar.

  9. Pour the milkshake into the jar.

  10. Garnish with whipped cream.

  11. Serve immediately with a wafer stick and maraschino cherry.
